What Makes a Luxury Brand

When we think about ‘Luxury Brands’ the main factor that we mentally gravitate towards, is the sheer exclusivity, the high-end eminence and the high price tag associated with it. 

So what defines Luxury? What makes a luxury brand? 

While some would see the word “luxury” itself as something too 'extravagant' or 'expensive', if you are in my world reading this, I know you define luxury differently. I personally see true luxury as a high frequency and it is a necessity in my brand and life.

Some said luxury is superficial. I discovered that it can be spiritual. Luxury is the freedom to choose. It's another way of the Divine Source expressing beauty in this world. 

Luxury does not have to be something, it can be a feeling, a more expansive way of expressing yourself in the world. 

Being a luxury brand is embodying a higher frequency and high-level transformation yourself and then extending them to your clients. That is my definition of a luxury brand, which I shared in my Luxury Manifesto Masterclass

I believe that elegance, abundance mindset, gratitude, soul desires and embodiment are all integrated within the realms of true luxury and building your luxury personal brand.

As I always say “A luxury brand is not about Dior or Chanel.” At the same time, there is no denying that we can learn a lot from Dior or Chanel and those big-name luxury brands about luxury branding. 

What makes a Birkin bag so desirable?  What is the psychology behind luxury brands? Why are people willing to pay a higher price for these luxury brands compared to similar products or services in the same category? 

 
 

Here are the 5 characteristics of luxury brands that you can apply to your own brand:

  1. A luxury brand is exclusive and usually has natural scarcity

Exclusivity means they are not available to everyone. It makes the clients feel special, unique, accomplished and even rewarded for their success. Because the high-end clients long to differentiate themselves.

I work with my clients to incorporate "exclusivity" into their brand. For example, when you think of a luxury brand, the goods or services are usually handcrafted, expensive to afford, or limited in edition. For those of you who are coaches, you can set the criteria regarding the clients you want to work with, limit the number of clients you work with or limit your 1- on-1 time with clients.

2. A luxury brand has an emotional connection to its clients

Do you know the #1 reason people buy luxury goods? It's not because of the superior design or craftsmanship. It’s the emotional reason. People want to reward themselves and show they “made it”. 

I work with my clients to find the emotional reasons people invest in working with you.  You might be selling a feeling, an experience, or a cause. An emotional connection to the clients distances a luxury brand from mass-market brands. It causes a subconscious response that is beyond our cognitive brain. It makes your high-end clients have a profound connection to your brand and brand story. 

3. A luxury brand portrays quality in design and performs at an experiential level

Timeless swirls, dynamic hues and precise detail. It lives in an environment of detail and performs at an experiential level  - store or website experience is detailed and unique. 

Think of Dior House and their haute couture, the details, the quality, the customised service…

From their designs, to the elegant details they integrate in their collections, the brand always has their high-end clientele coming back for more. Look at your business as a pursuit of excellence in every sense of the word–production, knowledge, customer service. Your high-end clients can tell the difference from the details. 

Your online presence is your haute couture show; your personal branding is that haute couture attire. Does your online presence reflect the luxury icon you are? 

4. A luxury brand has a high perceived value and corresponding pricing

An unusual phenomenon occurs - demand can increase when the price increases. It’s called a Veblen good.  A Veblen good is a type of luxury good for which the demand increases as the price increases, in apparent contradiction of the law of demand. 

People associate price with quality. For example, think about where would you go if you’re shopping by price only? If you’re shopping for style, quality, and service? And if you’re shopping for luxury and prestige? Your mind automatically ranks different brands.

Pricing is an art and I guide my clients to create high-perceived value and pricing that aligns with their brand positioning. You can make your own services or products become more desirable at higher prices.

5. A luxury brand is associated with PR, media, celebrities, and leaders

You don’t have to partner with a celebrity to become a luxury brand, but you do have to consider who you are partnering with, your media appearance, your social media, etc. What do you see when you google yourself or your brand name online?

Also, customer reviews, client case studies and testimonials are one of the most powerful sections on your website to increase your brand credibility and establish yourself as the expert.

Luxury is a state of elegance. It is something that is considered to be expensive, rare, and highly desirable, meets the highest standards of quality, craftsmanship, and design, and is often associated with status and social prestige. 

Ultimately, the perception of "luxury" hinges on the extent to which a client's connection with a luxury brand evokes feelings of luxury.

An emotional connection to the customer distancing a luxury brand from mass market brands. Your premium clients don't buy what you do. They buy why you do it. Your vision, desired feelings, and core values are the essence of your luxury brand.

What is your vision? What do you desire to feel? What are your core values?

When I asked these questions, many women will tell me "Elva, I don't know." But the truth is they DO know deep down inside, but they are just afraid to express it and the truth of who they are. Your brand will fold itself to you as you allow yourself to feel better and better about the truth of who you are.

I have created a brand value list to help you identify your core brand values. 

 
 

You choose how you want to show up in the world in a way that is authentically you. Your brand values should be in line with who you are and your desired feelings.

My desired feelings are Freedom, Adore, Chic, Ease, Joy. They are my internal brand guide and I check with them before I make any decisions in my business and life.

Once you identify your desired feelings, anchor them by writing on your mirror, putting them in your wallet, using them as a computer password, setting iPhone reminders or you can create a picture board for your desired feelings!

3. Get Clarity of Your Luxury Brand Muse

A luxe brand won't try to market to everyone because it dilutes its message. Luxury brands are exclusive. The clients of luxury brands long to differentiate themselves and they want to feel special, unique, accomplished, and even rewarded for their success.

Who is your luxury brand muse?

WHO your target market is is much more important than the WHAT you are offering. Think about your WHO before what you will offer. Your services are not for everybody.

What are her desires?

You need to understand what subconscious desires she has and what pain she has. Because we make purchasing decisions with our emotions and then justify them with our logic.

I use Maslow's hierarchy of needs to help my clients better understand the needs of their dream premium clients. Because luxury brands don't market to the lowest level of need such as physiological or safety needs. They market to people who are at the level of self-actualization. High-end clients are usually at higher levels of esteem and self-actualization.

How can your services solve her problems?

When you direct your product to the subconscious desires of your high-end client, you will start to attract them. Remember your dream client is not buying a "product" she is buying a "transformation".

I encourage you to create a mood board for your dream client. What does she look like? What is her lifestyle? What does she attract to?

4. Create Your Luxury Brand Visuals

Branding is not merely images, colours, and fonts, but that is a big part of it. Visuals have a huge impact on our emotions and it directly determines the connection your clients have with your brand.

A Brand Mood Board sets the mood for your brand and helps you get a better sense of the direction you want to go in when it comes to your brand's design and provides a constant source of motivation as you navigate your journey to where you want to be.

Here is how:

  1. List the top 3 luxury brands you resonate with visually and why. What's your favourite handbag brand, shoe brand, and clothing label?

  2. Create a Pinterest Board for your brand inspiration. Then look at what overall style aesthetic shows over and over again in your Pinterest board images. What is the main 2 colour on your board? What types of photos do you choose most?

  3. Choose the main colors and fonts you will be using in your branding.

  4. Choose the creative visuals that represent you and your brand values.

  5. Create your mood board where you take all of your creative visual standards and put them into one place.

I want you to take your time to really think about it so you don't choose something now and change it completely in a few months.

Remember choosing your colours, fonts, aesthetics, and style need to be an intuitive process. Let your decisions be guided by who you truly are and what you are inspired by. This is the secret to creating the brand visuals that your dream client will fall in love with.

I buy myself a bunch of fresh roses every week. I indulge myself with beautiful French manicures...These little things that I incorporate into my daily life make me feel elegant, feminine, and chic. And they permeate my life and my brand. That is what living on brand is all about. And when you do that, you attract your desires into your life. That is how I manifested a life filled with elegance, abundance, and of course, working with my dream luxury clients and fulfilling my soul’s purpose.

Activating your luxury brand is NOT to figure out what other high-ticket coaches or experts are doing in your industry and then become some sort of watered-down version of someone else’s brand.

What you are here on this earth to do is to be fully YOU and unleash the luxury icon inside of you. There is no one like you, your energy, your traits, your experience, your knowledge…

Your only job is to go all in to live your brand and let you be the luxury messenger for your brand message.

Here are the 5 steps to help you do just that.

 
 

1. Owning your true desires

What do you truly desire?

When I asked myself what I really wanted, my answer was loud + clear:

To do the things I love every single day that make the world a better place while surrounding myself with beauty and enjoying the finest things in life. I love indulging in a piece of chocolate every day. I adore the stunning Dior couture. I desire to take my parents to travel around the world in first class…

Your desires don’t need to make you a martyr where you’re of service to the whole entire world. You don’t need to justify your desires. If you desire a beautifully hand-crafted Lady Dior bag (just like I do), that’s perfectly perfect. I’m cheering you on. There’s nothing wrong with your desires.

Activate the Luxury Brand In You

But so many of us do not dare to own our desires.  We’re afraid of what others would say. We are afraid of being judged. We are afraid of being rejected for our desires. But dear, you know what? if you’re not owning your desires, you’re rejecting YOURSELF!

So what are your deepest desires?

2. Making your desires your brand

Embrace your desires into your brand. Because that’s the true you.

For me, when I started to own my desires and not hide them, my brand and business started to blossom.

I defined what luxury and a luxury brand mean to me. I created my luxury manifesto and unapologetically share my message of luxury branding. My brand also stands for elegantly incorporating luxury into your daily life to allow yourself to become that luxury femme of your luxury brand.

So what can you start to incorporate into your life to make your desires your living brand?

Do you desire to travel in luxury and host luxury destiny events but are worried about what your spiritual clients would think of you? The truth is your ideal clients will be attracted to you once you start to embrace those desires into your brand. 

3. Living your desires and living on brand

Embrace it into your everyday life. Breathe it, live it!

Start with little things. If you desire a Lady Dior bag, you don’t necessarily have to buy a bag in order to embrace it.

Ask yourself, why do I desire the bag?

Is it because you love the feeling of elegance it brings? Then start to incorporate the feeling into your daily life, now.  For example, buy yourself fresh flowers, put on Miss Dior perfume every morning, having a bubble bath.

You can start to live a luxurious life right now.

Living your desires every day and you can’t help but be alignment with who you truly are.

4. Sharing your brand message in an authentic way

You may have heard of “Fake it ‘til you make it”.

I believe in the opposite: “Be it until you become it!”

I love what my mentor Tara Marino says, “Beauty is TRUTH.” Sometimes it’s scary to show the world who we truly are. But that’s the only way for you to stand out from the crowd with confidence inside out.

Start where you are.

On a recent coaching call with a beautiful client, she confided she wanted to incorporate travel photos on her website but she hasn’t traveled much yet. We’ve mapped out a plan for her to start where she is now to incorporate travel photography into her brand, so she can express her true desires, now and connect with her true tribe, now.

Your luxury brand is about you but at the same time, it is not. It is about what you stand for and the message you are sharing. Let your message be the message. Let yourself be the luxury messenger. 

5. Matching your brand with the luxury online presence it deserves

Hope you had a magical holiday. I am back in the luxury branding boutique and excited for 2023. 

I have decided that 2023 will be the most opulent year of my life yet. I can feel it in each cell in my body. Every day, I follow my heart and instinct down this luxury path, operate in the quantum realm, and see evidence from my imagination rather than evidence from my physical world.

I used to define abundance and luxury in terms of ultimate freedom and feeling like I have more than I need. As I evolved, I view it in terms of generosity, sharing and community.

I am so grateful to have attracted you into my life in this online world. I believe in the law of attraction and I don’t believe that in life there are coincidences. I'm so excited about this year and all the amazing ways my team and I plan to help you achieve your goals.

I believe that as we are embodying our luxury icon and leaving our legacy, however large or small, the world is touched by our presence. It’s shaped by our light and the ripple effect we are creating.

Abundance isn’t truly abundance unless it’s shared. And when we’re giving from a place of abundance and love, it feels like receiving. And opening yourself to receiving is the key to tapping into the feminine energetics.

Your luxury personal brand is about the way you live. 

I set the intention and visualise in my mind about what I want to feel, who I desire to become, what I desire to do in my day and that is my internal brand guide. It guides me to embody the woman I want to be, how I show up, what I'll create in my branding and business.

It leads me to live on brand every day.

My life and my brand cannot help but bloom.

And my dream board cannot help but become a reality.

Beauty and luxury are daily in my life.

I am living my life as an elegant opulent connoisseur.

You’re the vibration. You’re the movement. You’re affecting everything.

We’re all tempted to tell ourselves stories about our limitations. It’s important to remember there is divinity in every one of us. No one is excluded. We really are that big. We really are that unlimited.
